 Over to Melanie now...

Tea and coffee scenes in novels are said by literary agent and writing craft guru Donald Maass to be low-tension points that writers should avoid including in their manuscripts. Margie Lawson would describe them as walking the dog scenes.

I decided with my 50th novel to have a tea-drinking scene that was a high point of tension. You have to know the rules so you can break them, right?

Poppy Silverton runs a tearoom in a quiet English village but super rich and super ruthless Rafe Caffarelli wants to develop the local manor house (her childhood home) into a playboy hotel. She lives in the dower house on the estate bequeathed to her by the late Lord Dalrymple and won’t sell it to Rafe for any price.

Did I mention Rafe doesn’t like tea?!!

Here is where Poppy gives him a private tea tasting…

‘Um, do you take milk?’

‘I don’t know.’ He gave her a wry smile. ‘Should I?’

‘It rather depends on the type of tea,’ Poppy said. ‘I drink English breakfast with milk, but I drink Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Russian Caravan and Jasmine black.’

‘Give it to me straight. Just like my coffee.’

She poured him a cup and watched as he took a taste. He wrinkled up his nose and put the cup back down in the saucer.

‘Well?’

‘It’s a bit flavourless.’

‘Flavourless?’

‘Bland.’

‘It’s the highest quality Ceylon tea, for God’s sake,’ Poppy said. ‘What is wrong with your taste buds?’

‘Nothing’s wrong with my taste buds. I just don’t like tea.’

‘How about if you try it with some milk and sugar?’

‘I’ll try the milk but not the sugar.’ He gave her a heart-stopping smile. ‘I’m sweet enough.’

There is much more to this scene than this space allows so I hope you will read the rest of the book to find out if Poppy successfully converts the espresso only Rafe into an Earl Grey fan.

Oh and if you’re wondering about any walking the dog scenes, Poppy’s three little dogs, Pickles, Chutney and Relish provide plenty of tension along the way!

Warmest wishes,

Melanie Milburne

  1. Congratulations, Melanie! It's great to meet you. I've not considered adding a tea scene to the WIP, but I'm now thinking it might be a good idea.

Thanks, Nas, for sharing this! Hope you all have a great week! :)

    1. Hi Karen,
      Lovely to meet you too.
Don't put a tea/coffee scene in unless there is tension. Good luck!

  9. First of all, congrats on 50 books. I find that hard to imagine!

I'm tickled by the idea of making a tea scene full of tension. Rules are there to be subverted, right? :)

    1. Hi Nick,
      Thanks for the congrats.
Yes, the tea and coffee scenes are supposed to be no-no unless they are critical to the plot. I loved writing my tea scene with that in mind.

    1. Hi Medeia,
I agree with you! I think some of my best conversations with friends/family etc have been over coffee or tea. I have plenty of them scattered throughout my novels but try and make sure they are there for a good reason.
      Thanks for posting.

  11. Well good for Poppy!!! A man - no matter how smoulderingly gorgeous - who doesn't like tea in all its glory and many guises is not worth a tea leaf let alone a biscuit and some cream! So there! LOL! Take care
