What is your daily writing routine?
My daily writing routine changes depending on deadlines, life, and whether my characters are cooperating that day. I usually start with coffee and a quick review of what I wrote the day before. That helps me settle back into the story world before diving into new words.
I’m not someone who waits for inspiration to magically appear. Some days the words flow beautifully. Other days writing feels more like untangling Christmas lights. Either way, I show up.
I tend to write in layers. The first draft is about emotion and getting the story onto the page. Later drafts add depth, stronger character moments, and all those little details that make a story feel alive.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that consistency matters more than perfection. Small steps forward still move the story closer to “The End.”
One of the biggest challenges while writing His Daughter’s Faithful Companion was balancing the emotional wounds these characters carried while keeping hope at the center of the story.
Both the hero and heroine deal with fear, grief, and trust issues in very different ways. I wanted those struggles to feel real without losing the warmth and faith-filled heart readers expect from a sweet romance.
Max, the dog, also brought unique challenges because animals can’t simply explain what they’re feeling. His actions had to communicate emotion, tension, and healing believably.
In the end, those challenges became some of my favorite parts of the story because they reminded me that healing often comes one small step at a time.
More than anything, I hope readers walk away from His Daughter’s Faithful Companion with a sense of hope.
Life doesn’t always heal neatly or quickly. Sometimes heartbreak lingers longer than we expect. Sometimes fear convinces us to keep our distance from people who care about us. But even in those difficult places, God can still bring healing, love, and unexpected joy.
I also hope readers are reminded that family isn’t always perfect. It’s built through grace, forgiveness, and showing up for each other day after day.
And of course, I hope Max steals a few hearts along the way.
