  1. What is the first book that made you cry?

I think it was called Red: A dog. I read it in elementary school. He befriends a wolf who later dies. Broke me in half and made me forever prefer stories with happy endings.

  1. What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

Book piracy and the fact there’s little that can be done to stop it.

  1. Does writing energize or exhaust you?

A little of both. There are times when completing a scene can have me very ramped up. Other times I’m drained. It’s hard to predict.

  1. What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Taking all the advice as gospel. All the ‘rules’ of publishing are really just guidelines. Also, workshops and courses and craft books are all great, but the real way to learn how to write a story is to write. Just do it.

  1. Does a big ego help or hurt writers?

Great question. You definitely need enough confidence to put yourself out there, then you need the humility to take criticism, but also a thick skin. It’s a tough balance.

  1. Tell us about your book...

Dom and Eve come from rival hotel families that have been at war for three generations. The first time they meet, they’re

completely drawn together, but once they realize they’re actually enemies, they avoid each other for five years. Then they get stranded on an island where the passion they’ve been denying explodes. But they still have this animosity to defuse so Dom suggests a marriage of convenience. It’s got passion and angst and touches of humor. I hope you’ll try it!

    1. I found that sending DMCA notices removed the books from the sites. So if everyone started sending notices for their books, these sites could be shut down. Thanks for coming by to read this post, Elizabeth.

  5. Ah yes, the balance of a good ego to get your book out there, but not so big that you can't accept advice on how to make it better.

    1. Full disclosure, this is why I don't work with a critique partner. I like my editor to weigh in once I've made the book as good as I can make it, but I can't *bear* comments midway or my confidence collapses.

  8. I'm so glad she tells us that writers should NOT TAKE ALL ADVICE AS GOSPEL. Thank you. This would've saved me much tearful torment had I known this years ago.

    1. Oh Robyn, SAME, lol. I've done so many things thinking I'm doing it 'right' only to feel later that it was a horrible mistake.... Ah well, live and learn, right?

  9. Interesting to hear that the writing process can both energize and exhaust a professional writer but it totally makes sense.

    1. Romance especially is very emotionally intensive. Sometimes I feel like I'm scraping the bottom of the well. But the satisfaction of turning in a book (like I did today) is very much worth the struggles :)
