Feature on Ann McIntosh and Best Friend to Doctor Right

This week Our Feature on Author is on: Ann McIntosh. She has a new book out this month, a medical romance: Best Friend to Doctor Right.

Author Ann McIntosh was born in the tropics, lived in the frozen North for a number of years, and now resides in sunny Central Florida with her husband. She’s a proud Mama to three grown children, loves tea, crafting, animals (except reptiles!), bacon, and the ocean. She believes in the power of romance to heal, inspire and provide hope in our complex world. You can visit her website at www.authorannmcintosh.com for upcoming books and other news.

Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

I think they could. Most writers are, at heart, keen observers of human nature, and don’t have to be able to feel an emotion to understand, interpret, and apply it to a character. For me, this is in the same vein with people saying to my husband how lucky he is to be married to a romance writer, as though our life together must be magical. I laugh every time, because realistically, I’m not terribly romantic at all!

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

I’d say the first time I read The Hobbit, and was completely transported into a whole other world. I had already developed a voracious love of reading, and have stories I read as a child that still stay with me, but The Hobbit was transformative.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I’d probably choose the Doctor Bird for my mascot, because my brain works the way a hummingbird flies; zooming about with seeming wild abandon, but also hovering and concentrating on the specific flower it needs to. The Doctor Bird (aka the red-billed streamertail, scientific name: Trochilus polytmus) is also the national bird of Jamaica, the land of my birth and heart.

Tell us about your book…

Best Friend to Doctor Right, is a tropical friends-to-lovers romance. When Dr. Mina Haraldson is at her lowest ebb, there really is only one person who can buoy her up; her oldest friend Dr. Hezekiah ‘Kiah’ Langdon. Travelling with him to the tropical island he calls home is meant to bring her back to life, but neither of them could anticipate exactly how completely she is reawakened.

  5. From the tropics to the North. That had to be a tough adjustment.

  10. Congratulations on the new book! I've always wondered if all writers of romantic books were romantic by nature. You've confirmed that that is not the case.
