Hi and thanks for inviting me to your Haven. I’ll just relax on this velvet chaise while we chat.

What did you most like about writing Birthright?

I loved how it brought two of my passions together. I’ve written about romance in fiction and in real life for years. A longtime space junkie, I’m also a huge fan of Star Trek, Doctor Who and Big Bang Theory, and can give the Vulcan salute with both hands. Leonard Nimoy says that means I’m bilingual.

You made up an island kingdom. Would you like to live there?

In a heartbeat. Carramer combines the best of the south pacific and Australia’s tropical north. I love the blend of cultures to be found in all these places, where history is still being written between the indigenous people and later arrivals.

Anywhere you haven’t travelled that you would like to go?

As a former volunteer zoo guide I’d love to see bears in the wild. And to go into space, but I’d have to be a lot younger and fitter. I may need a time machine for that one, which is another dimension I wouldn’t mind exploring.

What item do you always pack when you travel?

An open mind. IMO there’s little point going somewhere new unless you have fun growing and learning. We won’t talk about the time I tried fire dancing with a Samoan boxing champion.

What do you think makes a good story?

One that keeps me up reading long after I should be asleep, and where I must find out what happens next. That’s the kind of story I love to write.

Tell us a bit about your current release.

I’ve already given a few hints. As well as romance, Birthright has what fantasy writer, Erica Hayes, calls aliens and evil astronauts. There’s also suspense, humor, some sadness but always – always - a happy ending.

About Birthright
Former police officer turned deputy governor, Shana Akers, is used to handling high-stakes situations. But after learning that a space shuttle mission about to be launched from her island home may have a shocking secret agenda, she must turn for answers to the man who has challenged her mind and emotions for years.

Scientific genius and space center director, Adam Desai, is a truly self-made man. Found adrift at sea as a baby, he knows nothing about his origins until two VIPs attending the launch force him to confront the truth about his past, changing everything Adam has ever believed about himself.

Faced with a danger that threatens the entire world, can Adam and Shana find the strength to trust not only each other, but the mysterious VIPs whose unusual abilities defy logical thinking? Especially when it becomes clear that they'll need all of their combined resources to reclaim humanity's BIRTHRIGHT.

  1. I used to be an overpacker. Then I went overseas for the first time, thinking I had packed light and still managed to have a pair of shoes I didn't put on. Now I vascillate between 'take ALL of the clothes!' and 'ah, just throw a spare pair of undies and a credit card in the handbag and I'm good to go'. Both approaches have bitten me in the bum. But if offered a chance to time or space travel, I'd manage without even the handbag if I had to!

    Congratulations on Birthright, Valerie!

    1. Agree with you on time and space travel, Imelda. I was also an overpacker, probably still am. Qantas recommends laying out everything you feel you need to take, then putting half of it back into the closet.

  2. I alway try to pack as light as possible but I always pack a smart outfit just in case. Even when I backpacked around Europe, I carried a pair of heels and a dress. And yes, I did wear them - in Paris!! Where would I most like to go? Anywhere, I love to travel!

    1. Hi Jennifer, thanks for commenting. It's amazing what we 'don't' need for travel, but one smart dress is a good idea. Omit it, and be sure of an invite to a palace somewhere LOL. That said, I spent a month at the KSP Writers' Centre in Perth as their Established Writer-in-Residence on basically two outfits & 2 pairs of shoes, with a wrap, scarves and jewellery for variety.

  3. My iPad, my Kindle and a few paperbacks in case the batteries on the first two die :D

I've only just started discovering the wonders of travelling with an iPad. It's like having an office in your handbag - if you find the right apps...

I'm planning a trip to the UK because I really want to explore the wonders of Scotland especially. Men in kilts? I'm there!

  4. Half my genes are Scottish, Juanita, I'm so there. I only have to hear the accent to melt. Still not sure about the iPad but I don't leave home without a notebook computer. And a backup paper notebook. Anal, I know, sigh.

  5. My kindle. I've gone on a trip, been about an hour from home, and had to turn around to go back for my kindle. Of course at the time, I was in the middle of a good book. Maybe if I hadn't been I could have just bought a book when I'd arrived at my destination.

  6. I took books on a Kindle to Perth and couldn't make them open, no matter what. Ended up going to K-Mart and coming back with an armload of paperback books. Reminds me, I still haven't retrieved those downloads.

  7. Hi Valerie, I too am an overpacker (next trip will be a pack a week before then start culling job) - What I won't travel without though is my digital camera, samsung tablet and android phone, and a notebook and pen.

  8. As few clothes as I think I can get away with, and two pairs of shoes--one dressy pair and sneakers. My Kindle, my laptop, and my phone. My supplements (in a zip-lock bag, so I don't take up space with bottles). Minimal cosmetics. I want to go to Ireland and Scotland. And New Zealand and Australia. Oh, just give me a ticket and I'll go anywhere. :)

  9. Always bring my ipad or paperback and, after that, I just pack light and try to leave my troubles behind with a great story like yours!

    1. Good advice Natasha, leave a week for culling. Must try that next trip.
Hi Tori, supplements in bags is good, how does that go down with Customs? I thought pills and potions had to be in original containers.
Wendy, you'll go a long way LOL.

A lot of my packing includes stuff for workshops, giveaways etc. Ideas on handling that welcome too.

  10. Hi Valerie,
Lovely to see you here in this lovely corner of the world. I'm a Trekkie from way back, and LOVE Big Bang Theory (SOOOO funny!) I prefer the Dr Whos of old (the last two just don't appeal to me). And there are so many shows I loved like Babylon 5, Torchwood, Roswell, Earth 2. I think I could go on and on :) Who knows, maybe one day Birthright will be up there on the small screen in a mini series, or on the big screen as the first in a trilogy?

What would I pack? I really love to have my luxuries like hair products and body products. And at least one bottle of good perfume.

Valerie said, "We won’t talk about the time I tried fire dancing with a Samoan boxing champion."
Now there's a story I would like to hear about!

I already have my copy of Birthright, so no need to put me in the draw :)

    1. "The last two Doctor Whos don't appeal to me"....you do know about my...er...appreciation of David Tennant, don't you? Some may say obsession. Then there's the delectable John Barrowman on Torchwood...there's my luggage filled already :-)

Fire dancer = long story, but we came >< to setting Channel 10 studio on fire.

  12. I want to live in an island kingdom! Islands are a great place for a setting. So much conflict comes from being trapped in a body of water.

Great interview. Love the premise of Birthright!

    1. Hi Emily, Nas is lovely, isn't she? Glad you like Birthright's premise. Yes, islands are great settings for "ship in a bottle" type stories. I may have made my kingdom a tad bigger though, if I'd know I'd be setting 14 books and a novella there though. To live there, I'd need shopping, which is why Hawaii works so well for me :-)

Yes Morgan, island kingdom appeals a lot since it's heading for 40 deg C in Australia today. Will keep you updated on the time machine, Lynda. Thanks everyone for commenting.
